This piece depicts how the world I grew up with completely changed my perception of beauty standards. I was taught that my hair needed to be straight, my skin lighter in order to be considered pretty. So that’s with through the generations represented by each character, the features are different , it is either the skin is lighter, or the hair that are at odds. So how was I supposed to embrace my blackness , when the upbringing I grew up with made me hide it?
